What Makes Your Day?

What makes your day? I know what makes mine.

Recently, I had a chat with a manager in an organization where we are delivering career development work. The individual manager caught my attention because her HR leader passed me a simple note saying, “thought you’d be interested in what one manager did with the tools your organization provided!” Now I get these notes occasionally, and when I take the time to really read them, they make me smile.

This IT Manager was exposed to our virtual training on Career Conversations that her organization decided to roll out to all managers. One of the tools that accompanies this training was a Career Conversation Habit Builder (questions for every day of the week, for a year). The manager (busy as she was) decided to send her team a question a day and invite their responses. She made the request as easy as possible, and was amazed by the response. It just hit me that our employees are hungry for something that makes them think about themselves, their wants, their interests, their passions, and builds a more human interface with their managers

So, ask your favorite question and see what happens next. Not only are you getting the conversation going but you are opening the door for building a relationship at work that matters. It doesn’t have to be hard. It’s as simple as a question. And, while it made my day, I expect this manager made her employee’s day as well.
